[0001] The present invention relates to metal drums and more particularly to metal drums used in dryers for drying by hot gas, in particular by hot air, a web, such as a nonwoven web having been consolidated. by jets of water or another textile or paper wet tablecloth. Metal drums of this kind are rotatably mounted in a hood or box, into which hot air from the outside of the drum passes through holes in the drum through the web to be dried over the drum. And the hot air is sucked continuously from the inside of the drum with one or more fans.
[0002] The metal drums used in the dryers must both have a large open area at the level of the web to be dried for the passage of large amounts of air, and a good structural rigidity to allow the construction of large and large drums. diameters. They generally consist of a metal structure covered with at least one layer of a fine metal fabric in contact with the sheet to be dried. When the metal structure of the drum does not have enough support for the fine metal fabric, they are then covered with a first layer of a coarse metal fabric and a second layer of a thinner metal fabric than the first and in contact with nonwovens or tablecloths to be dried.
[0003] The fabric or fabrics are mounted as tight sleeves and attached to each end of the drum on its side faces or on the edges of its circumference. These fabrics have the function of thinly diffusing the air 5 at the level of the plies to be dried and not marking them or deforming them by their fine structure, which is much thinner than that of the underlying metal drum. It has been proposed to construct these drums from a perforated rolled sheet. It's a very economical technique. However, this construction technique is inefficient because, on the one hand, the open area of the perforated sheets is generally less than 50% or even less than 40%, which is detrimental to good drying efficiency and, on the other hand, suction does not occur. It is not uniform because of the large metal bridges between the perforations of the sheets. It has also been proposed to EP 1,563,134 to construct these drums with plates crossed over their field and nested one inside the other at their intersection.
[0004] This technical solution overcomes the disadvantage of the small open area of perforated sheets by a very large open area. But these drums have a low rigidity and flex in width, that is to say for widths greater than 3.5 m. They can warp and twist during emergency stops in production. Now we have found and this is the subject of the present invention a drum overcoming the disadvantages of the prior art, that is to say having both a large open area, a rigidity much greater than that of the solutions of the prior art allowing the production of drums and ovens in more than 4 meters in width, and at an economic cost of construction, less expensive than the solution of EP 1563134. The subject of the invention is metal drum having a side surface provided with holes and extending from one front side to the other of the drum. The lateral surface consists of U-shaped profiles each having a bottom and two branches extending radially from the bottom to the outside of the drum. Each profile is welded to its two neighboring sections by their branches. The bottom of each profile is perforated holes. This drum is stiffer than the drums used so far, even if it is of great length, as it is suitable for drying wide webs.
[0005] It is desirable, in order to have good drying, that the average opening rate of the bottom of each profile should be between 15 and 70%. The rate of opening is defined by the quotient of the surface of the holes by the total surface of the bottom. When considering a portion of the bottom, this rate of opening of part of the bottom is the quotient of the surface of the holes of this part of the bottom by the total surface of this part of the bottom. It is better that the holes are rectangular with their long sides parallel to the longitudinal direction of the profiles. The largest dimension of the holes is preferably between 40 and 150 mm. The width of the bottom is preferably between 70 and 120 mm. In one embodiment, the drum is mounted around a fixed box having perforations 3033875 4 giving increasing opening rates from the side to which the air suction fan is connected to the inside. drum. This box is intended to distribute evenly the suction of air over the width of the drum. In this case, the U-shaped sections of the drum have a perforation of constant opening rate over the width of the drum. In another preferred embodiment, which is even less expensive, there is no fixed box for distributing the suction inside the drum. In this case, the uniformity of the drying of a wide sheet can be all the more easily guaranteed, since an increase in the rate of opening of the bottom of each section from one frontal side to the other of the drum is expected. This increase in the rate of opening can be done in a continuous or staggered manner. If one subdivided, by thought, the drum into ten parts along its length, the opening rate of the bottom, the front side closest to the suction of hot air inside the drum, 20 is more small as the opening rate of the next part of the bottom and so on until the bottom part lying on the other side. Preferably, the rate of increase of the aperture ratio is between 3 and 6 times the smallest aperture rate of the side closest to the suction. The main thing is to compensate, by a higher opening rate, the lower rate of suction of hot air from one side to the other of the drum to obtain a uniform distribution of air velocities through the web to be dried over the entire width of the drum. For large widths, it may be advantageous to draw air through both ends of the drum rather than one. In this case, the aperture ratio increases, preferably symmetrically, from each edge to the center of the drum and is maximum in the center of the drum. To further improve the open surface of the drum at the outer metal covering fabric, at least one of the branches of each profile is shorter than the other so as to rest the metal fabric only on the field. a single branch for 2 successive U-shaped sections. Only one of the two branches 10 is flush with the outer diameter of the drum. To further improve the rigidity and cylindricity of the drum, at least one of the branches of each section, and in particular only one of them or possibly each of them, has a notch, into which a hoop penetrates, which strengthens the drum and makes it more rigid. For a drum with a diameter, with a diametrically opposite bottom at the bottom, of between 1,400 and 3,000 mm, a hoop can advantageously be provided every 300 to 600 mm. The invention also relates to the use of a drum according to the invention in a dryer, wherein the drum is rotatably mounted in a hood or box. Hot air, arriving from one side of the drum, passes through the holes of the drum through a web, particularly of nonwoven, to dry passing over the drum and is sucked from the inside of the drum by the drum. one side or both sides. The dryer comprises a drum according to the invention mounted in a box. The box has one or more 6 entries for hot air. The dryer comprises means for passing a web to be dried on the drum. The invention also relates to the use of several drums according to the invention in the same dryer. In this case the drums are generally arranged horizontally in one or more successive boxes. In the accompanying drawings, given by way of example only: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a drum according to the invention; Figure 2 is a developed view of a portion of the side surface of a drum according to the invention; Figure 3 is a partial sectional view transverse to the axis of the drum of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a detail view of the drum of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a sectional view of a dryer according to the invention and Figure 6 is a sectional view of a variant of the dryer. The steel drum shown in FIG. 1 comprises a plurality of U-shaped sections or longitudinal members 1. As shown in FIG. 2, each has a bottom 2 with holes 4 and two branches 3 extending radially from the bottom 2 towards the bottom. outside the drum. Each section 1 is welded to its two adjacent sections by their branches 3, so as to form a continuous drum. The drum of FIG. 1 comprises seven hoops 5 uniformly distributed over the length of the drum and driven into notches 6 in the branches 3 (see FIG. 4). As shown in Figure 2, the number of the bottom holes 4 increases from one front side to the other of the drum. Between the end of the drum on the left, in FIG. 2, and the first hoop 5, there is, by spar 1, four rectangular holes 4, whereas, between the first and the second hoops, the bottoms have three holes 4, the number of holes 4 going decreasing to the right. Instead of or at the same time increasing the number of holes, the size can be increased as well. Figure 3 shows the branches 3A and 3B of each spar 1 of unequal length, the shortest branch of a spar being welded to the longer leg of the adjacent spar 1. The dryer shown in Figure 5 comprises a box 11 subdivided by a partition 12 into a compartment 13 of treatment and a compartment 14 of air circulation. A drum 15 according to the invention is rotatably mounted in the compartment 13 and a fan 16 is mounted in the compartment 14. The fan sends air into the drum 15 and returns it to the compartment 14, then 13. The tablecloth The textile to be treated rests on a thin cloth 17 around the lateral surface of the drum 15. The air 25 of the compartment 13 is heated by one or more burners 18 in the case of using the gas, or exchangers in the case the use of other sources of energy, such as steam or fuel oil. The dryer of FIG. 6 differs from that of FIG. 30 by the presence of a stationary internal box 19 enabling flaps to adjust the air flow over the length of the dryer.
